Former Auxiliary for the Archdiocese of Cologne and Bishop of the Titular See of Vina, Msgr. Joseph Ferche hailed from Pschow, Poland, and studying theology in Breslau, was ordained priest there on June 22, 1911. Pastor in the then German cities of Oława and Cosel, on September 30, 1931 he was was appointed canon of the Reverend Chapter of the Cathedral of Breslau.

Elected auxiliary for the see of Breslau by Pope Pius XII, he received his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Vina on September 29, 1940 from Cardinal Adolf Bertram, assisted by Bishops Joseph Godehard Machens and Heinrich Wienke.

Expulsed from the city of Breslau by the Communist Regime, he settled in the Archdiocese of Cologne, of which he was soon appointed auxiliary on March 27, 1947 and member of its cathedral chapter. Named to the chair of the Diocesan Caritas, he took care of the expellees, especially his fellow Silesian compatriots.

Awarded with the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany n the occasion of his seventieth birthday, Pope John XXIII appointed him Assistant at the Pontifical Throne on June 22, 1961. Honorary canon of the cathedral chapter of the diocese of Tarbes et Lourdes, Ferche passed away on the twenty fifth anniversary of his episcopal ordination. His Requiem Mass was presided by the then Apostolic Nuncio in Germany, Archbishop Corrado Bafile, while Cardinal Joseph Frings interrupted his works at the Second Vatican Council in Rome in order to deliver the sermon at Cologne's Cathedral.
