Castermans served as chaplain in Molenberg, rector of the Krankenhauses "De Goddelijke Voorzienigheid" and vicar of general of the diocese. In November 1973, he was appointed Canon of the Chapter of Roermond's Cathedral.
On January 15, 1982 Pope John Paul II, named Castermans, at the time aged 57, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Roermond. He received his episcopal consecration on February 13, with the Titular See of Skálholt, from Msgr. Joannes Baptist Matthijs Gijsen, assisted by Bishop Johannes Willem Maria Bluijssen and Future Cardinal Msgr. Adrianus Johannes Simonis.
Bishop Castermans resigned from office on May 3, 1997 at the age of 73. He died in Born on Monday, April 21, 2008, aged 84.
