Roman Catholic Cardinal. Reiden born Walter Gut was the son of a teacher and organist. Joining the Order of Saint Benedict at the Einsiedeln Abbey, receiving the religious name of Benno, he took his solemn vows on January 6, 1918. Undergoing studies at the Einsiedeln Abbey's College, at the Musical Conservatory of Basel, at the University of Basel and successively in Rome, at the International College of Saint Anselm and the Pontifical Biblical Institute, he was ordained priest on July 10, 1921. Appointed to the teaching staff of the International College of Saint Anselm in Rome in 1930, a position he held until 1939, when he was named professor at the Einsiedeln Abbey College, he was elected abbot of Einsiedeln on April 15, 1947, receiving the traditional episcopal benediction of new abbots from Archbishop Filippo Bernardini, Apostolic Nuncio in Switzerland, on the following May 5. Elected the fourth abbot primate of the Benedictine Confederation and thus head of the Benedictine Order on September 24, 1959, he was successively elected archbishop of the titular see of Thuccabora on June 10, 1967 by Pope Paul VI, receiving his episcopal consecration eight days later from Cardinal Eugène Tisserant at Einsiedeln's Abbey. The named Pontiff created him cardinal deacon with the deaconry of San Giorgio in Velabro in the consistory of June 26 of that same year in advance for his naming as prefect of Congregation of Rites three days later. President of the Consilium for Liturgical Reform, he resigned the position of abbot primate of the Benedictine Confederation on September 8, 1967. Becoming prefect of the newly established Congregation for Divine Worship on May 7, 1969 with the dissolution of the Congregation of Rites, the Cardinal died in a Roman hospital of acute circulatory ailment. His body lies interred at Einsiedeln's Abbey.
