Professor within the Grootseminarie of Luik, Pope John XXIII named Heuschen as Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Liège, receiving his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Druas, on September 21, 1962, from Bishop Guillaume Marie van Zuylen.
When the Diocese of Hasselt was erected by the Holy See on May 31, 1967, Msgr. Heuschen was named as its First Bishop by Pope Paul VI.
He retired in favour of Msgr. Paul Schruers at 74 years of age, on December 15, 1989, and died unexpectedly at the San Salvator Home in Hasselt, shortly after taking a stroll in the garden, a few days short of his 87th birthday, on July 1, 2002.
