Former Official of the Roman Curia and Rector of the Pio Romeno Pontifical College, Monsignor Vasile Cristea AA., was born in the village of Şomoştelnic, Târnava-Mică, Romania, on February 24, 1906, and was ordained to the priesthood through the Augustinians of the Assumption on March 27, 1932.

Appointed Rector of the Pio Romeno Pontifical College in Rome in 1936, after refusing to take the oath to the Romanian People's Republic, he was considered a traitor by the Communists, remaining in exile in Rome.

On July 2, 1960, Cristea was named official of the Roman Curia and Bishop of the Titular See of Lebedus by Pope John XXIII, receiving his episcopal consecration on the following September 8, from Bishop Giovanni Mele, assisted by Bishops Giuseppe Perniciaro and Platon Volodyslav Kornyljak.

Following this appointment, Bishop Vasile, who had always resided in the Vatican, had the care of the Romanian Greek Catholic missions in Paris, Munich, Madrid and other parts of Europe. In this capacity, he conducted visits in France, Germany, England and the United States, among Romanian communities there.

Retiring from office at 81 years of age on October 10, 1987, Bishop Vasile passed away in Rome on January 17, 2000, aged 93.
