United States Supreme Court Chief Justice. After graduating from Bowdoin College and Harvard Law School, he returned to his hometown of Augusta, Maine in 1855 to practice law. The next year he moved to Chicago, Illinois to establish a law practice in the fast growing frontier city. He became active in Illinois politics serving one term in the Illinois House of Representatives and attending several Democratic conventions as a delegate. A successful lawyer he turned down offers to serve as Chairman of the Civil Service Commission and Solicitor General of the United States. In 1888 however, the successful lawyer accepted President Grover Cleveland's nomination to serve as Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court. He served in that position until his death in 1910.
