Cause of Death: Natural gas poisoning

Seven university students (Büşra Bek, Elif Koyuncuoğlu, Oğuzhan Tozburun, Ceren Okkalı, Tarık Şükrü Yılmaz, Özgür Turan Atilla, Erol Can Özdokumacı) celebrating New Year at home were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning in Ankara. The tragedy was revealed when the students did not respond to phone calls made by their relatives early in the first day of the new year.

Relatives of the students entered the apartment with police and found the dead bodies of seven Bilkent University students. Early statements by officials said the incident stemmed from the blocked chimney of the building where natural gas-operated domestic heating systems were used. Officials also said the building being almost empty prevented any further tragedy. Later investigations revealed the chimneys were not blocked. The incident occurred due to the natural gas chimney's old funnel, they said.

Yılmaz Ateş, the deputy leader of the Republican People's Party, or CHP, meanwhile, claimed there was negligence in the incident. Another family living in the upper flat of the building was also affected by the gas poisoning and called officials of the gas company before the incident took place. The child of the family also knocked the door of the seven students to ask for their help before the incident but nobody opened the door, according to Ateş. The officials came to the building at around 5 a.m.

"If the officials also controlled the apartment where the students were, perhaps this tragedy could have been prevented and the students could have been rescued," Ateş said.
