Edward Cunningham was a Sergeant of the Correction Officers at the Attica Prison, in Attica, New York. He served 22 years as a Prison Guard, dying in the line of duty at age 52. Sgt. Cunningham was a World War II. Army Veteran, he fought in the Pacific Theater. He received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and various other Medals. Sgt. Cunningham was one of seven Correctional Guards who died during a prison riot. He died amidst gunfire that broke out. The leader of the riot was never charged with any crime. After the suspect was released from prison, he shot and killed two New York Policemen on April 2nd, 1978, on a Brooklyn Street. Sgt. Cunningham was survived by his wife, daughter, and seven sons. Four of his sons followed him in his line of work.
