James was the son of John Taylor, Jr. & Mary Frances Hartwell. Mary's death entry, with John's signature as the informant, gives the date as 19 March 1896, aged 60 years. She died at Goodwill. Her parents were A. D. and Jane Hartwell. No death records are found as of 2015 for John Taylor Sr, John Taylor Jr, thier wives, nor A.D. or Jane Hartwell.

James' birth date is different on the ledger entry from the year of his birth than the one that is given on his death record.
The ledger, handwritten and in alphabetical (not sequential) order may have been a copy, perhaps bearing reported dates. This entry, line 33, gives date as April 1st, with his father as informant and mother as Frances. Informant on the death record of James was his daughter, Mrs. Chas. Bibey (Virgie Taylor) and the date of birth reads as March 10, 1866. He died at home with his daughter present, aged 86, at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.
He was survived by sons Leonard and (Luther) Albert, daughters Mary, Vergie, and Virginia, 27 grandchildren, 50 greatgrandchildren, two greatgreatgrandchildren, and his brothers Sawyers of Goodwill and Newton of Montcalm.
Services were held the following Monday at the Montcalm Penecostal Church, Reverands Foley and Quesenberry presiding.
