Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in Narraguagus, Maine, he entered the Union Army at the start of the Civil War and was commissioned Colonel of the 6th Maine Infantry Regiment. Serving with the Army of the Potomac, he led his regiment at the battles of Crampton's Gap, Antietam and was wounded at Fredericksburg. In 1863, he distinguished himself at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and the Overland Campaign. Promoted Brigadier General in April 1864, he was assigned command of the 1st Division, XVII Corps. On September 29, 1864, commanding his corps at the Battle of Fort Harrison near Richmond, Virginia, he was killed in action.
