Sgt. Grant was a member of Company D, 1st Maine Cavalry. He joined in 1861 and was wounded on June 6, 1864 after re-enlisting and still stayed to muster out with his company in 1865. He died last in his family and the monument does not reflect this. But there is a flag holder, without flag over his grave. Age 79 years, 8 months, 17 days
