Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, Medal of Honor Recipient. He was awarded the Medal of Honor as a Lieutenant Colonel in the 2nd Maine Cavalry for action on March 23, 1865 in Evergreen, Alabama. His citation reads "Advanced alone in the darkness beyond the picket line, came upon three of the enemy, fired upon them (his fire being returned), wounded two, and captured the whole party." He was a brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 26, 1865 for "Gallant and meritorious conduct in Pollard and Mobile, Alabama."
