Sister Brigit Marie Hackett, SSND, died Sunday, August 29, 2010, at Anna House, The Sarah Community, in Bridgeton, Mo., from dementia. She was 87 and a former teacher and tutor.

Sister Brigit Marie was born in St. Louis, Mo. She entered the congregation of the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1943 from St. Liborius Parish in St. Louis. She professed first vows July 31, 1946 and final vows in 1952. She earned a master's in education from St. Louis University in 1966 and a bachelor's in chemistry from Webster College in St. Louis in 1954.

Sister Brigit Marie was in education for 56 years. She began her teaching career at St. Gerard Majella in Baton Rouge, La., where she taught from 1946-49. She taught at St. Mary High School, Gainsville, Texas, in 1949; St. Michael, St. Louis, 1949-54; Archdiocesan Ninth Grade Center, St. Louis, 1954-56; St. Joseph, Farmington, Mo., 1956-59; St. Francis, Aviston, Ill., 1959-65, where she served as principal from 1965-73; Sacred Heart, Rich Fountain, Mo., 1973-74; Teutopolis Elementary, Teutopolis, Ill., 1974-85; and St. Gertrude, Krakow, Mo., 1985-92.

From 1992-2002, she was a tutor at the former Notre Dame Learning Center in St. Louis. She served a ministry of community service from 1992-2005, when she retired to The Sarah Community.

Sister Brigit Marie was an excellent educator during her many years of ministering as teacher and principal. A quiet, prayerful and peaceful woman, she generously gave her life to the service of God's people.

Sister Brigit Marie is survived by one sister, Teresa Hackett from O'Fallon, Mo., and two brothers, Robert Hackett from O'Fallon, Mo., and Harold Hackett from Bridgeton, Mo.
