Sister Miriam Patrick O'Donnell, SSND
(née Eleanor O'Donnell)

First Profession August 3, 1950
Motherhouse
Baltimore, Maryland

Beloved daughter of Patrick & Katherine (née Kelly) O'Donnell; devoted sister of Sister Catherine Marie O'Donnell, SSND.

Sister Miriam Patrick O'Donnell, SSND, who taught school for nearly five decades, including 30 years at one Brooklyn, N.Y., high school, died on Jan. 15, 2013, at Lourdes Health Care Center in Wilton, Conn. She was 83 years old and had been a professed member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame for 62 years.

Eleanor J. O'Donnell was born on Feb. 8, 1929, in Medford, Mass, to Katherine (née Kelly) and Patrick O'Donnell, both natives of Ireland. She attended Immaculate Conception School in Malden, Mass., where she first met the School Sisters of Notre Dame and graduated from Girls Catholic High in Malden in 1946.

The next year, she entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Baltimore as a candidate, following her older sister Mary into the congregation by five years. As a novice, Eleanor was given the name Sister Miriam Patrick. She made her first vows in 1950 and her final vows in 1956.

Sister Miriam Patrick's first teaching assignment was at St. Ann School in Baltimore (1950-52). She next served two years at Mount Calvary School in Forestville, Md., before moving in 1954 to St. Anthony of Padua in South Ozone Park, Queens, N.Y., where she stayed for six years. She later taught at St. Anselm in Brooklyn (1960-63) and Most Holy Redeemer on 4th Street in New York City (1963-68) before moving to Bishop Kearney High School in Rochester, N.Y. (1968-70).

In 1970, Sister Miriam Patrick returned to Brooklyn and began teaching at St. Saviour High School, where she would continue to serve for 30 years, teaching English, religion and driver education. Though she retired from teaching in 2000, she continued working in education and community service by tutoring students at Marymount College in Manhattan and volunteering at St. Joseph Parish, Yorkville, in New York City.

In 2005, Sister Miriam Patrick retired to prayer and presence at Villa Notre Dame, a retirement residence for SSNDs in Wilton, Conn. She moved to Lourdes Health Care Center in 2009.

Sister Miriam Patrick earned a bachelor's degree in English from what is today Notre Dame of Maryland University in Baltimore. She earned her master's in English in 1968 from Boston College.

Sister Miriam Patrick was remembered for her smile and gentle way that brought tranquility and peace to others. She was prayerful and could often be seen with her office book in one hand and a rosary in the other. Her former St. Saviour High students recalled her sense of humor and concern for others. She was never too busy to offer her prayers and support for anyone in need and often reminded her students of how special they were.

Sister Miriam Patrick is survived by a sister, Charlotte Reilly of Waltham, Mass. Her sister, Sister Catherine Marie O'Donnell, also an SSND, died at Lourdes Health Care Center in November 2012.
