School Sister of Notre Dame Mary Jane Van Deuren died on January 25, 2013 at Our Lady of the Angels Community in Greenfield, Wis. She was 98.

Sister Mary Jane was born on October 5, 1914 in Green Bay, Wis., to Francis and Christine (Butler) Van Deuren, and was baptized Anna Jacoba at St. Willebrord Church in Green Bay, Wis. There were eight children in the family.

Anna received her elementary education for two years at Green Bay public school and six years at St. Willebrord. It was at St. Willebrord that she met the School Sisters of Notre Dame and wanted to be a sister. She attended East High School in Green Bay, graduating in 1932. Anna worked for a time as a clerk. She said about her desire to be a sister, "if it was God's will, nothing could hold me back." On February 1, 1933, Anna entered the SSND candidature at the Milwaukee motherhouse. On August 1, 1934, as a novice, she received her religious name, Mary Jane. Sister Mary Jane professed her first vows on August 2, 1935. She earned a bachelor's degree in education from Mount Mary College, Milwaukee, in 1948; a theology certificate from Mount Mary College in 1958; and a library certificate from the state of Wisconsin in 1970.

Sister Mary Jane ministered for nearly 55 years as a teacher, predominately working with students in the primary grades. Her ministry locations included the following schools: Holy Angels, Gary, Ind.; St. Joseph, Galion, Ohio; and in Wisconsin at Holy Cross, Milwaukee; St. Aloysius, West Allis; St. Mary Burlington; St. Patrick, Elkhorn; St. Frances Cabrini, West Bend; St. Joseph Orphanage, Green Bay; St. Jerome, Oconomowoc; St. Mary, Menasha; St. Francis Xavier, DePere; St. Nicholas, Freedom; and St. John Nepomucene, Prairie du Chien. Upon leaving classroom ministry, she worked in the areas of social concerns and pastoral ministry at St. John Nepomucene. She retired in 1992 but continued ministering through her prayer, presence and service. She lived at Fox View Convent in DePere prior to moving to Notre Dame of Elm Grove in 1998. From 1998 to 2003, she served in volunteer ministry at Notre Dame Middle School, Milwaukee. In February 2011, Sister Mary Jane joined Our Lady of the Angels Community, Greenfield, Wis.
