Sister Joanna "Warin" Valoni, SSND, 75, of Lafayette, La., died there July 30, 2002, at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center.
Visitation is 4-9 tonight at Martin & Castille Funeral Home in Lafayette, with prayer services there at 7 p.m. Visitation continues at 8 a.m. Thursday at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Lafayette, until Mass of Christian Burial there at 10 a.m. The Most Rev. Edward Joseph O'Donnell, D.D., Bishop, Diocese of Lafayette, will be the presider of the funeral mass, and the Rev. Monsignor H.A. Larroque, JCD, VG, Vicar General, Diocese of Lafayette, will conduct the services and give the homily. Vesper services are 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary of the Pines in Chatawa. A Mass of the resurrection and burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, at St. Mary of the Pines in Chatawa. Hartman Funeral Home of McComb is in charge of local arrangements.
Sr. Joanna was born May 30, 1927, in St. Louis, Mo. She was the daughter of the late James Valoni and the late Angela Colombo Valoni.
She began her Catholic education in St. Louis attending grade school at St. Aloysius Elementary School and high school at Notre Dame High. Sr. Joanna went on to college and completed one year of studies at LeClerc College in Belleville, Ill., in 1945.
In Aug. 1945, she entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame at Sancta Maria in Ripa, St. Louis. She was professed in July of 1948. She went on to earn a bachelor's of science from Quincy College in Quincy, Ill., and a master's in business administration from De Paul University in Chicago.
Sister Joanna taught elementary school in Missouri and in high schools in Illinois and Texas. She served as principal of high schools in Texas and Louisiana. Elected Provincial Councilor in 1967 at Notre Dame Motherhouse in Irving, Texas, she went on to be elected as Provincial Superior for two terms, serving from 1969-1977. She began the School Sisters of Notre Dame first missionary activities in Ghana, Africa. She was appointed to the Research Commission in Rome in 1977. She later traveled to provinces in Europe and behind the Iron Curtain.
Sister Joanna was hired by Monsignor Sigur in 1978 in the Lafayette Diocesan Office of Pastoral Planning. In June of 1979, she was appointed Chancellor of the Diocese of Lafayette by Bishop Frey and served with three Bishops for more than 20 years. Sister Joanna became the first woman in the United States to be appointed as Chancellor, a position she filled with distinction.
She was a member of the St. Genevieve Catholic community. Her family said they are grateful for the presence of hospitality and dignity she created for all who knew her.
Survivors include cousins in St. Louis.
