The first Shamu was captured off the coast of Washington in Oct 1965. After her capture Shamu was sent to Sea World California, which was in it's early stages of learning about orcas. Shamu was a member of J, K, or L pod but it is unclear. On August 16, 1971 Shamu died after a little less than 6 years in captivity. On April 19, of the same year, she attacked Annette Eckis which raised awareness of Killer Whales in captivity.
