There was simply no one in this world like my grandmother!
If I live to be 100, I'll never meet another person who could tell stories, bake cookies, and give hugs like her. Every single day, my heart breaks at the thought that she is gone, but rejoices at the fact that I am one day closer to seeing her again!
Leopoldine Schreivogl was born in Mailberg, Austria to Franz Schreivogl and Marie Stehlik Schreivogl. She had a brother, Hans Stehlik, and a sister, Stefanie Schreivogl. She had a happy childhood with many friends and beloved family members until World War II swept across her country. This was a time of much struggle and loss for her family.
Shortly after the war, she met a young American soldier named Murray Jones, and after an extended courtship, they were wed on April 12, 1952. She moved with him around Europe and America, having four beautiful children along the way.
Tragically, she lost her true love, my grandfather, in 1964, and she never remarried. She devoted her life to hard work in order to provide for her children. She was a cook who became well-known in our small town for her amazing skill in the kitchen!
She was a faithful member of her Lutheran church, where her charismatic personality led her to make many friends, including several fellow German speaking ladies whose company she simply adored. Going to church with Grandma was always a treat because it was one of the few opportunities I had to hear her converse in her native language. I still love singing the songs she taught me to my children. :-)
She was diagnosed with multiple myeloma several years ago, and she fought very valiantly. No one expected her to go, because she had been doing so well, but this disease is a monster. Within two weeks of its forceful return, she was gone.
She loved her flowers and her visits from little feathered friends at her bird feeders. Any token you choose to leave for her will be very appreciated. She was truly one of the greatest loves of my life, and I will miss her always!
