Architect. The second woman to graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a degree in architecture, from 1895 to 1909 she was office superintendent for Frank Lloyd Wright. Her presentation drawings were instrumental in the promotion of Wright’s works, and often appeared at exhibitions and accompanying published articles and portfolios. When Wright left Oak Park in 1909 he offered her control of his practice, but she declined. In 1911 she married Walter Burley Griffin and helped him win the Canberra competition. In 1914 they left for Australia to oversee the design and construction of the capital city. Marion Mahony managed the Sydney office and was responsible for the design of all of the private commissions that they obtained. After Griffin's death in 1937 in India after falling off scaffolding, she returned to Chicago.
