JOHANNES GEORG BENFER, who is the founder of the BENFER family (in the United States), was born in Girkhausen, Arnsberg, Westphalia, Prussia/Germany. He arrived in the United States in January 1767 from Rotterdam, Germany on the ship "Betsy." He and his wife built a log cabin, which still stands.
The family became thickly scattered over the fertile hills and valleys of Snyder County, PA.
