Zachariah was the son of Robeson "Robert" and Martha Carter. Standing at 6'6", Zachariah Carter was an imposing figure in his community, where he practiced farming. During the Civil War, Zachariah enlisted in the 51st North Carolina Infantry, becoming a private in company E on February 28, 1862. His son, Neill, also served alongside him. The 51st North Carolina took part in the defense of Fort Wagner on July 18, 1863, during which the 54th Massachusetts Infantry made their famous assault.
Zachariah did not escape the war without hardship. Two other members of his family, Henry and Thomas, became some of the many casualties. Henry, who served with the 18th North Carolina Infantry, died of pneumonia on April 20, 1863. Thomas was killed at Williamsburg, Virginia on May 5, 1862, while serving with the 5th North Carolina Infantry. Neill, the son previously mentioned, was also wounded twice during his service with the 51st North Carolina Infantry.
Zachariah raised a large family, having 15 children with his wife, Elizabeth Lamb, whom he married on December 28, 1844. In 1876, he founded and became Reverend of Long Branch Baptist Church, located in Britts Township.

NOTE: Examination of the administrator files following his death indicate he died in 1885.
