"Ole Bob" was born Dec. 25, 1927 on the Battle Farm near Nolensville to the late William Robert and Cleo Smith Battle.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth Ogilvie Battle; his daughter, Valerie Battle Kienzle of St. Charles, Mo.; his son, William Robert "Rob" Battle III of College Grove; grandchildren, David Kienzle and Ashley Kienzle of St. Charles, and William Robert Battle IV and Joseph Battle of Franklin, Tenn.; brother, Lucien Battle of Nolensville; and sister, Betty Battle Green of Nolensville.
Mr. Battle worked his way through the ranks of the former Nashville Banner staff for over 54 years, retiring as a vice president and business editor. He was a contributing writer for numerous national magazines and publications, including World Book Encyclopedia.
He was active in various Shrine and Masonic activities for more than five decades as a member of John B. Garrett Masonic Lodge, a 33rd degree Scottish Rite and York Rite Mason, past potentate of Al Menah Shrine Temple, and member of the Royal Order of Jesters. He served on various boards, including the Middle Tennessee Council, Boy Scouts of America (recipient of The Silver Beaver Award); Nashville Boys and Girls Club; Tennessee Farm Bureau Foundation; The Society of Professional Journalists/Sigma Delta Chi; Tennessee Press Association; Country Music Association; Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce; Tennessee Agricultural Museum at Ellington Agriculture Center; College Grove Senior Citizens Center, and Elks Lodge, No. 72.
He was a longtime member of Brentwood United Methodist Church and a founding member of the Robert I. Moore Sunday School Class.
