Lewis's christened name in Germany is Ludwig Christian Friedrick Nutzmann. Born 8 December 1846 (Christened 25 December 1846) to Maria Dorothea Johanna Flachskamp (Mary Flascone) and Vollrath Friedrick Christian Nutzmann (Fredrick F Nuzman).

Lewis Nuzman was born at Mecklenburg, Germany, December 14, 1846 and died at his home in Soldier, Kansas, January 14, 1926. He came with his parents to America at the age of nine years. They settled first a La Porte County, Indiana, coming on to Kansas in 1860.
He enlisted in the 11th Kansas Cavalry on March 29, 1864, receiving his Honorable Discharge August 31, 1865.
He was united in marriage October 28, 1868, to Dorothy Channel. To this union was born one son, Clinton. Dorothy's death occurring April 8, 1871.
He was again united in marriage January 27, 1874 to Mary Ann Laughlin. To this union was born four children, Edna, Carrie, Nellie and Arthur. Mary Ann's death occurring April 9, 1886.
On November 20,1889 he married Sarah Elizabeth Moberley. To this union was born one daughter, Ruby.
He endured the hardships of early pioneering, spending most of his life on his homestead, two miles west of Soldier.
He has been a member of the Methodist Church of Soldier for the past 35 years.
He was a men of firm conviction, upright in all his dealings. One of his chief delights being their family worship in the home each morning.
He is survived by his wife, three children, Clinton and Ruby of the home address and Arthur of Frankfort, Kansas nine grandchildren and two aged brothers, Charles, of Idaho and John, of Soldier, besides a host of relatives and friends.
The funeral services were held at the Methodist Church on Saturday at 2:00 p.m., conducted by his Pastor Rev. Paul S. Durham, assisted by Rev. Nathaniel McAferty of Corning, a lifelong friend of the family.
The music was furnished by Miss Gertrude Tolin, Miss Uay, J.A. Sproul and Robert Markham.
The pallbearers were his nephews: Edward, Thomas, Earl and Fred, sons of John Nuzman and Fred and Scott, sons of Fred Nuzman.
