THE SOLDIER CLIPPER MARCH 1, 1894
One of the saddest and most unexpected deaths that we have ever recored was that of Mrs. Charles Backman, which occurred at Kansas City, Mo., on Tuesday, February 27, 1894, the cause being from a surgical shock to which she had submitted in hopes of regaining health and being able to remain with her loved ones longer. On the 28th the remains were sent to Soldier where they were met by a large number of weeping friends who accompanied them to her late home, where they remained until Thursday, March 1st, on which date the funeral occurred and she was laid to rest in the Soldier Cemetery.
The funeral sermon was delivered by Rev. Warner, taking his text, "There shall be no night there"
Reka Nuzman was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, on March 12, 1842, and early in life moved to America, and at the age of 15 years was joined in marriage to Charles Backman and for some 37 years walked by his side as a faithful wife, a kind mother, and ever-present helper. She was the mother of six children - four boys and two girls - the oldest boy passed away while a child.
The husband and five children and the brothers and sisters are well and favorably known by nearly all our readers and have the heartfelt sympathy of all in this, their sad bereavement. Early in the 60's Mrs Backman moved with her husband from Indiana to this section of Kansas and her influence has always been on the side of right. Her main idea of life was to make those around her happy and in this aim she succeeded admirably. She has been a church worker for may years and at the time of her death was a member of the M. E. church at this place.
She was one of God's brightest jewels here on earth and the crown of the finally faithful is her reward.
