Buddy played one season with a Dodgers minor league team and served seven years in the Army Reserves. In 1966, he joined the U. S. Capitol Police force, retiring in 1992. For decades he volunteered as a coach for the Washington Metropolitan Police Boys and Girls Club and at St. Albans School. In 2004, the Guy Mason Recreation Center field was renamed the Buddy Burkhead Field in his honor.
Buddy died April 13, 2014. The burial took place at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Aspen Hill, Montgomery County MD, on April 23, 2014 at 10:00 AM. A memorial service was held that evening at 6:30 PM in the Martin Gym, St. Albans School, Massachusetts and Wisconsin Aves, NW, Washington, D.C.
