Gilbert was the son of Margaret Day and Alfred H. Abernathy. He married Bernhardine J.M. Schumacher and they had four children. He was appointed to the U.S. Capitol Police on 2 Jan 1962 and served in several Divisions until promoted to Sergeant in 1966 and then Lieutenant in 1968. He worked in the Administrave Staff Office where his rank continued to progress. In May 1980, the U.S. Capitol Police Borad created a new Investigation Unit and he was promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief to lead that Bureau. He served as Deputy Chief until his death.
