Cassels, Sir Walter (1845-1923), judge, was born at the City of Quebec, Lower Canada, on August 14, 1845, the son of Robert Cassels and Mary Gibbens {MacNab} Cassels

He was educated at the University of Toronto (B.A., 1865), and was called to the bar in 1872 (Q.C., 1883). He was Chief Justice of the Exchequer Court of Canada from 1908 to his death at Ottawa on March 1, 1923. He was created a knight bachelor in 1917

Walter Gibbens Pringle Cassels married Susan Hamilton, daughter of Robert Hamilton and Isabella {Thomson} Hamilton, at St Mathew's Anglican Church, Quebec City, on September 24, 1873. Witnesses included the bride's siblings Robert Hamilton and Robina Hamilton, and the groom's brother, Allan Cassels

In Toronto about 1891, where Walter was a barrister, they resided at 70 Grosvenor Street. He was a founding member, Vice-President, and President of The Toronto Granite Curling Club

Having moved to Ottawa by 1911, the family resided in St George's Ward, at 21 Blackburn Avenue, not far from Strathcona Park and within brisk walking distance of the Rideau Canal and Parliament Hill
