Mitchell served in the United States Army. Stationed in San Antonio at Fort Sam Houston, he was a technician in the psychiatric hospital.
He was discharged from the service early, as one of the school superintendents in San Antonio asked if he would teach math, because they desperately needed a math teacher. A substitute was hired to cover for him until his discharge was complete. He taught there for one year, before moving back to Rogers, Arkansas where he and his wife had lived before he went into the army. The superintendent in Rogers asked him to be principal and teacher in Garfield, near Rogers. He stayed there for two years. While in Garfield, he also preached at the local church of Christ.
A superintendent from Joplin, Missouri convinced Mitchell to come there to teach, so the Beans lived there from 1957 until 1984, when Mitchell retired and the family moved to Oklahoma.
The draw of being able to teach at a Christian school lured him out of retirement and he taught at Green Country Christian Academy for four years. He then put in four years at Union High School, retiring a second time in 1992 after suffering a heart attack.
Always active in his church, he served as an elder in Joplin and then again in Broken Arrow. The heart attack put an end to his service in this role, but he continued to be as active in the work of the church as his declining health would allow.
He is survived by his wife, Charlene of the home; children, Steve Bean and wife Renee, Cindy Krumpeck and husband Randy, Kevin Bean and wife Sheila, Rich Peaney, Randy Peaney and wife Julie, Robin Walston and husband Travis; sisters, Ruby Selby and Mildred Brown; brothers, John Bean and Pat Hasley; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services for Mitchell were 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012 at the Broken Arrow church of Christ. Burial followed at GAR Cemetery, Miami, Okla. Arrangements are under the direction of Christian-Gavlik Funeral Home, Broken Arrow.
Memorial donations can be made to Search of the Lord's Way, P.O. Box 371, Edmond, OK 73083; or church of Christ Missions.
