As a young man in North Dakota Cleitus worked for the railroad on a crew laying railroad ties.
When his parents separated he became the bread winner for the family at about age nineteen. Among other things he was proficient as a sheep shearer and he "broke" horses.
He came to Missouri in the late 1930's. He mentioned when he first came to Missouri when riding in a car with relatives that he didn't think he'd like living here. The roads were lined with trees. He was used to the wide open spaces of North Dakota. He said it reminded him of a chicken coop.
He was used to the brutal winters of North Dakota, he would drive out in the worst winters of Missouri when natives thought it was snowing too bad to be out.
He farmed and then later in life he worked as a veterinarian's assistant and clipped and groomed fancy dogs.
