The husband of Mary Wolfe.

Father of Samuel Thomas McGinnis, Ami Wolfe McGinnis, and William McGinnis. These three children show with the family for the census, and parents' names are given on death records of the three sons.

William was a Union veteran, of 3rd Regiment, Co. B, West Virginia Calvary.

The county ledger entry gives cause of death as "accident", with occupation as "laborer". This record gives only "J & C McGinnis" as his parents.
He was 55 years of age.
(of note, the arithmetic would give the birth year of 1831, but the stone bears 1833).

Evidently the B Company was often with the D and E companies, moving frequently and with many engagements.
The roster includes the name of " William McGinniss";
Co. E, B.
The 1890 Pension Index includes his name with Company B, 3rd Calvary Regiment.
The 1890 Special Schedule of ED 69, Kingwood, lists
Mary, widow of William McGinnis,
Private, Company B, 3rd Regiment, WV Calvary,
enlisted 15 Aug 1862 - 30 Jun 1865,
length of service 2 years, 10 months, 15 days.
Included in the household at time of 1880 census was niece, Fannie.
I think that was likely memorial 126108593, Mary's niece, daughter of her brother Ami.

Also to my great grandfather and mother, grand father and mother, my uncles, and especially and most of all - my father, for putting up with my questions in trying to determine the location of this graveyard. The name of Snyders was used at the time of most of these early burials.
The name Cobun was used later.
The death record for our ancestor Wm Henry Wolfe who is also buried here, gives the name as Snyder's, and the one for his wife Eliz. gives the name as Cobun, thirteen years later upon her death.
Thanks to the Boy Scouts of Troop 99 for the work they did in the cemetery.
The new sign carries the name Snyders.

He did not include a close-up image of the government marker for William.
The graveyard is on private property.

For those still using old submissions that had the name as Wm. Hunter McGinnis - that was not the same individual.

The William H., who was the son of William J., in the list of his children, below, has been entered by various persons into other websites as William Hunter McGinnis because one clerk wrote that on his son's death record, though his birth entry says William Clark McGinnis ( In either case, he is not the William Hunter McGinnis mentioned above). There is indication from birth records of his children that the William who served in 3rd Regiment may have had the middle name of Jackson.
