Hiram was a veteran of the Civil War in Company D of the 31st Maine Infantry. He was also a Key figure in 2 Bucksport murder cases. He was out behind the barn on the night of October 13, 1876 at the Trim Farm and claimed to have heard a groan shortly before the entire farm burnt to the ground. He was also killed (claimed accidentally on the night that Sarah Ware died and was found dead a week later with wounds consistent to falling down stairs) in September 17, 1898. He was also almost murdered with an axe the year before by his second wife a Native American. In a domestic fight, she grabbed an axe and hit him 3 times in the skull with it.
