Major League Baseball Executive. As General Manager of the St. Louis Cardinals (1957 to 1964, 1968 to 1978), he helped acquire such star players as Lou Brock, Bob Gibson, Bill White, Tim McCarver and Steve Carlton, which led to three National League Pennant-winning teams (1964, 1967 and 1968) and two World Championships (1964, 1967). Earlier in his career with the Cardinals, Devine was General Manager of their AAA farm team the Rochester Red Wings. From 1965 to 1967, he served as Assistant to the President and later General Manager of the New York Mets. During his tenure, he was helpful in building the 1969 World Champion "Miracle Mets" team which included such stars as Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan and Jerry Koosman. Devine was named Executive of the Year in 1963 and 1964 and later worked in the front office for the San Francisco Giants and Montreal Expos. In addition to his career in baseball, Devine served as president of the St. Louis Cardinals of the NFL from 1981 to 1986. During World War II, Devine served in the US Navy.
