Opera Singer. Known as "La Diva Turca" (The Turkish Diva), she was a bel canto soprano regarded as one of the finest opera singers of the 20th century. She made her international debut at the La Scala Theatre Milan, Italy, in 1957 and appeared there for 15 seasons between 1957 and 1983. Throughout her career, she performed in opera houses in Europe, America and had numerous successful commercial recording. Her repertoire consisted of 72 roles by composers Prokofiev, Gluck, Mozart and Puccini, sang in 9 different languages. In 1985, she retired from the operatic stage but continued to appear in concerts until 1992 and served as the artistic director of La Scala Singing Academy. She died of heart failure.
