Alma was for many years principal of the Phillips School in Watertown, Massachusetts. She graduated from Framingham Normal School in 1928, along with her lifelong friend Irene Paulson. They also traveled to Europe together in 1937, visiting their family roots in Germany and Sweden, and again in 1969 and 1971.
