George H. Maddock, 87, of Valparaiso, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008 at the VNA Horton Hospice Center. He was born January 27, 1921 in Gary to Mitro and Anna (Koval) Maddock.
He graduated from Froebel High School in Gary in 1940, attended Valparaiso University, and received his Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Education from Northwestern University, where he played on the 1949 Rose Bowl Team and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity.
Hr served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper attached to the Office of Strategic Service and parachuted into France three weeks prior to the D-day invasion. He was a teacher and coach for the Gary Schools for 35 years, retiring in 1984, and was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, member and past president of the Exchange Club of Valparaiso, member of the American Legion Post 94 and a member of the board of directors of the Porter County Association for Handicapped Children and Adults. He was also inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame.
On August 21, 1971 he married Dorothy (Spiro) Simmons, who survives, along with three children, Marcia (Dan) Lowe of Salina, KS, Kerry (Norvin) Conway of Solsberry, and Michael Maddock of Indianapolis; two step children, Douglas (Diane) Simmons of California and Diann Simmons of Wisconsin; one brother, Mitchell Maddock of Indianapolis; two grandchildren, Sandra (Dave) Friedrichsen and Shannon Conway; and four step grandchildren, Rachel Westergren, Kelly, Kristi and Kody Simmons.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, at Christ Lutheran Church, 2610 N. Campbell St., Valparaiso.
