L. Marie Tinder, 85, passed away of natural causes on Wednesday, August 18, 2004, at Generations Assisted Living in Belgrade.

Marie was born in Absarokee on August 19, 1918, to Earl and Edith (Cook) Westerman. At an early age, she moved with her parents to Pablo. She attended schools in Pablo and Ronan, graduating from Ronan High School in 1937. She attended business school in Spokane and was later employed by the AAA government office in Bozeman. She also was a waitress at the Pines Café.

On April 18, 1941, she married Jack M. Tinder in Hardin. In 1944, Marie and Jack moved to Seattle where they lived until 1946. At that time, they moved back to Montana to the family farm on the lower Madison. This was their home, along with their two children, until Jack's death in 1980. Marie continued to live on the farm until 1999, when she moved to Three Forks.

Marie was truly a farm wife, milking cows, raising chickens, day-old calves, bum lambs, irrigating, growing a garden, and serving chicken and noodles or fried chicken to guests on Sunday.

Perhaps her greatest contribution was the time she spent with her children and grandchildren, teaching them all about farm life and passing on her strong character.

Marie belonged to the Madison Valley Women's Club for many years. She also was a member of the Three Forks Historical Society, Rebekah Lodge, Hobby Club and VFW Auxiliary. She was very proud of being part of the group that put together the history book of the Three Forks area.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack in 1980; and by her brother, Paul Westerman.

Marie is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Skip and Judy Tinder; a daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Grant Ballantyne; granddaughter and husband, Chris and Steve Mest; grandson and wife, Brad and Shelley Ballantyne; granddaughter and husband, Mandi and Ryan Striech; and great-granddaughter, Ashley. She is also survived by sisters, Jeanne (G. R.) Brown and Pearl (Clay) Myron; brother, Jim (Rose) Westerman; sister-in-law, Nelda Westerman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, at Dokken-Nelson Sunset Chapel. Interment will follow in Sunset Hills Cemetery, Bozeman.

Memorials may be made to the Three Forks Historical Society, Three Forks Ambulance, or to a charity of choice.
