Sandra I. Visser was welcomed into her heavenly home on Tuesday, April 27, 2010. She will be greatly missed, but we are thankful she is free from her struggle with Alzheimer's disease.

She was born to Milo and Phyllis Grue in Billings on Aug. 7, 1948. Sandy was raised in Manhattan, graduating from Manhattan High School in 1966.

She attended Montana State University for two years, before marrying her high school sweetheart, Leslie Visser, on Aug. 20, 1968. They began their life together in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where she received a bachelor's degree in education from Western Michigan University in 1970.

Sandy taught for one year in Kalamazoo, then took a break to raise her family. Once her children were in school, Sandy started to pursue her dream of teaching young children to read. She taught at Amsterdam School for 24 years, retiring in 2004. Sandy touched many lives with her love for children and her passion for teaching.

Sandy enjoyed scrapbooking and quilting. With the help of her sister-in-law, she completed her goal of giving each of her grandchildren their own quilt. She always enjoyed her days quilting with Deb. The quilts will be treasured family possessions for many years.

Sandy is survived by her mother, Phyllis Grue; her husband of 41 years, Les; her children, Randy (Melissa) Visser and Brenda (Brent) Amunrud; grandchildren, Cullen, Cavan and Lydia Visser, Matthew, Josiah, Seth and Elliana Amunrud; brother, Dennis (Deb) Grue; six brothers-in-law; 10 sisters-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express our gratitude to Arlene, Jamee, Donna, and the staff at Edgewood Vista for their tremendous help and care over the last couple of years.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 3, at Manhattan Christian Reformed Church in Churchill. Preceding the memorial service will be a graveside service at Meadow View Cemetery at 9 a.m. Visitation will be at Dokken-Nelson Funeral Home on Sunday, May 2, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association . Sandy's family also would like to invite you to join them in participating in your local 2010 Memory Walk in Sandy's honor.

Arrangements are in the care of Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service; www.dokkennelson.com.
