Simon was born September 13, 1918, in Manhattan, Mont., to Sam and Jenny Dyk. He was educated in Churchill and Baker Creek schools and attended Simpson Bible College.
He met his wife through his twin sister, and they shared a double wedding in June 1944 in Bozeman.
Simon was a man of many interests with a keen engineering mind. He was an avid reader of Montana State University Extension research information and held a farm implement patent. He pursued various occupations including potato farmer and carpenter on many of the major building projects in Gallatin Valley for over 30 years. He learned his carpentry skills on the Northern Pacific Railroad and from his railroad experience gained his lifelong passion for steam engines. Even in his last days Simon could still describe in great detail the uniqueness of each train engine that had passed through the valley.
As a life-long member of Grace Bible Church, he served in various roles including singing in a quartet and the choir, deacon and superintendent of Sunday School. In the 1950's, as a form of mission service, he preached in small rural congregations in Wilsall, Ennis, Logan, Cardwell and Silver Star. He was deeply committed to understanding the spiritual truth of the Bible; a man of strong convictions with a passionate sense of justice.
He loved his family and enjoyed time with his extended family. He particularly enjoyed fishing and hunting with his brothers.
Simon was preceded in death by three brothers, John Dyk, Peter Dyk and Ralph Dyk; and three sisters, Lena Rahn; Hilda Dyk and Trinia Dyk.
In addition to his wife Elizabeth Dyk, he is survived by his twin sister Jeanette Goosen of Seattle, Wash., sister Agnes (husband Albert) Nasner of Wolf Point, Mont., and sisters-in-law Katherine Dyk of Bozeman and Lois Dyk of Houston, Texas.
He left a legacy of faith for his surviving three children and their spouses, nine grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. Family members include: daughter Marlene (husband David) Holsclaw of Colorado, and their children Sebastian Holsclaw, Maria (husband Charlie) McVicker (Emma and Blair), Greg (wife Tracy) Holsclaw, and Geoff (wife Syd) Holsclaw, (Soren and Tennyson); son Warren (wife Tricia) Dyk of Kentucky, and their children Andrew (wife Natalie) Dyk (Sarah), and Melinda Dyk; and daughter Janice (husband Ted) Reed of New Mexico, and their children Kerry Reed (Katyana, Sydney and Ethan); Kevin (wife Amy) Reed (Nathan), and Kyle Reed.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, Sept. 19, at Grace Bible Church. Interment will follow in Sunset Hills Cemetery.
