He was a vastly influential singer-songwriter and producer who recorded in the genres of glam rock, art rock, soul, hard rock, dance pop, punk and electronica during his eclectic career spanning five decades. Born David Robert Jones in Brixton, London, England, he played saxophone and after stints in several bands, he signed with Mercury Records and released his 1969 album 'David Bowie', which featured "Space Oddity" a song about an astronaut. Among the albums he released over the next few decades were 'The Man Who Sold the World', 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars', 'Aladdin Sane', 'Diamond Dogs', 'Young Americans', 'Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)', 'Let's Dance', 'Tin Machine', 'Outside', 'Heathen' and 'Blackstar'. Bowie appeared in several films including 'Just a Gigolo' (1978), 'Christiane F.' (1981), 'Yellowbeard' (1983), 'The Hunger' (1983), 'Labyrinth (1986), 'Absolute Beginners' (1986) 'The Last Temptation of Christ' (1988), 'Basquiat' (1996), 'Mr. Rice's Secret' (2000), 'Zoolander' (2001) and 'The Prestige (2006). Over the course of his career, he has won numerous awards including two Grammy Awards and three BRIT Awards and has a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. In 1996, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2005, Bowie was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2006, he received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Bowie, who was married twice and had two children, died after an 18-month battle with cancer, just two days after his 69th birthday.
