Entertainer. He will be best remembered as the announcer for the television series "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In" (1968 to 1973). Born Gary Altman, his father was a county treasurer and sheriff, his mother was an educator. He suffered from diabetes from the time he was eight years old. At the age of seventeen, he landed a position as disc jockey for a station in Omaha, Nebraska and aided them to become one of the top stations in the country. Following this success, he moved to California and continued to work as a disc jockey for a Top-40 rock and roll oriented station. His popularity and distinctive voice was suited well for animated TV programs such as "Space Ghost" (1966), "Yogi's Space Race" (1978), as well as many others. He was also associated for a lengthy time with the children's TV program "Sesame Street." Owens received a star for his work in radio on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1981.
