Religious Leader, Televangelist and Author. Schuller created the weekly 'Hour of Power' television show that at its peak popularity attracted an international audience of millions, wrote dozens of books and built a 40-acre church campus with buildings designed by some of the world's foremost architects. A graduate of Hope College in Holland, Michigan, he attended nearby Western Theology Seminary. In 1950, he graduated from the seminary and was ordained by the Reformed Church in America, a Protestant denomination, and began a five-year stint as a pastor of a Chicago church. In 1955, Schuller, along with his wife and two children, moved to Orange County, California to start a church. Finding no available worship space, he rented the Orange Drive-In theater for $10 a week and began preaching atop the snack bar. The church grew quickly and by 1961, he commissioned architect Richard Neutra to design the world's first "walk-in-drive-in" church building in Garden Grove at a cost of $5-million. Schuller then set up the Institute for Successful Church Leadership and in 1970, he became the first pastor to televise his weekly services, the 'Hour of Power' program. In 1980, the Crystal Cathedral, designed by Philip Johnson, was dedicated and became the centerpiece for his sprawling campus. In 1989, Schuller became the first pastor to preach on television in the Soviet Union. In 2001, he completed his campus with the $40-million International Center for Possibility Thinking, designed by Getty Center architect Richard Meier. The American Institute of Architects gave Schuller its first lifetime achievement award for the campus he created. In March 2010, Schuller, who wrote dozens of books with titles such as 'Turning Hurts Into Halos' and 'If It's Going to Be, It's Up to Me', formally cut ties to the ministry he had founded, citing "negative and adversarial atmosphere" that had enveloped the church's leadership.
