Actor. He played vaudeville, the Borscht Belt, Broadway, off-Broadway, television, movies and even operas. He appeared with Sammy Davis Jr. in “Golden Boy.” He was known to children in the 1950s and ’60s as Gramps, the animal expert, on “Wixie’s Wonderland” television show for children. He later voiced White Fang, Black Tooth, Pookie and other characters on the popular children’s television show, “Lunch with Soupy,” starring Soupy Sales. His stint with Soupy, and as Gramps, were only chapters in a show business career that spanned 50 years. Born in Detroit, Michigan, he always knew what he wanted to do, and started performing as a little boy. He was a World World II veteran, and later earned a bachelor’s degree from Wayne State University, and a master’s degree in dramatic arts from New York University. An actor, standup comedian and song and dance man, he died of a brain tumor in New York City at the age of 81.
