Gordon Allen Crow was born Nov. 29, 1923, in Newark, Ohio, the son and only child of the late Dr. Allen G. and Avanell Frenier Crow. His father was a physician.
Crow attended public schools in Newark and was a student at Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio, graduating with a bachelor of arts degree in 1947. He attended Ohio State University and received a bachelor of science degree in 1949.
During World War II, Crow served overseas with the 932nd Field Artillery in North Africa, Italy, France, Germany and Austria. His unit was attached successively to the American 5th, British 8th, American 7th and American 3rd armies and took part in the Rome-Arno, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. For his service, Crow received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three bronze stars.
During the Korean War, Crow served as an Army public information officer at Carlisle Barracks, Pa., and Fort Hood. While on active duty, Crow attended the Army Artillery School and the Armed Forces Information School.
In 1955, he joined First National Bank of Fort Worth as assistant manager of the bank's advertising and public relations department. He was named vice president and manager of the department in 1964. During his banking career, Crow graduated from the School of Financial Public Relations at Northwestern University and the Graduate School of Bank Marketing at Louisiana State University.
Rejoining First National Bank of Fort Worth in 1970, Crow formed the bank's Market Services Division, which included advertising, public relations and market research functions. He was a member of the bank's management committee. Crow retired from First National of Fort Worth at year-end 1982 on the eve of the bank's holding company (First United Bancorporation) acquisition by a Dallas-based holding company.
Following retirement, Crow joined Haskell & Stern, an executive search consulting firm with offices in New York and Fort Worth. He also taught advertising courses at several area universities.
In 1985, Crow joined the Better Business Bureau in Fort Worth as president and chief executive officer. At that time, the bureau served six counties in North Texas. In 1987, he organized and was named executive director of the bureau's Consumer Education Foundation. He retired from the bureau and its foundation in 1990.
Crow was president of the Advertising Club of Fort Worth in 1964, and was honored with a life membership in 1999. In 1975, he received the American Advertising Federation's Silver Medal Award for "exceptional service to advertising." He was the charter president of the Bank Marketing Association's North Texas Chapter in 1969.
In the early 1980s, Crow served as chairman of Fort Worth's Chapter, Texas Association of Business, and was named a life member of that organization. He was a board chairman of the Tarrant County Chapter, American Heart Association, in 1981, and served again on the association's board of directors in 1990-1991. He was a director of Casa Manana Musicals during the 1970s and the 1980s, and was president of Casa Amigos (the now defunct Casa Manana support group) in 1981. He served on the board of directors of Cancer Care Services in 1999. In 2004, Crow became a member of the Harris Methodist Fort Worth Auxiliary, and served as a volunteer downtown.
