He enlisted and mustered on 3 June 1862 at Fort Drewry, Virginia as a Corporal in Company "C", Virginia Southside Heavy Artillery. He was paroled at Appomattox Court House on 10 April 1865, and took the Oath of Allegiance in Richmond on 30 May.
After the War, he farmed in Chesterfield County. He and wife Helen R. Nott were married in Richmond on 30 April 1868. They had at least six children: Katherine, Amelia, Lillian, May, Edward D. and Nellie.
He is buried near his wife in his mother-in-law Catherine Nott's plot.
