Benjamin was a "Collector" by occupation. He served in the War of 1812 during July and August 1814, for which service his wife Sarah later received a pension.

He married Sarah in Caroline County, Virginia in November 1835. They had at least eleven children: Henry, Edward, Susan, Virginia, James, Betty, Anna Maria, William, twins Hunter and Sallie, and Anna.

Benjamin died of "Paralysis", per Cemetery records, and is buried in his wife's plot.
