The son of William Anderson, and his wife, Mary Goodwin Woodson Anderson. William L. Anderson attended the University of Virginia. He was married on 8 July 1845 to Martha Jane Gray. A farmer in Culpeper County and a teacher in Fairfax, he volunteered as a private in Company B of the 13th Virginia Infantry Regiment. Wounded at the Battle of Malvern Hill on 1 Jul. 1862, he died soon after.
