Parents Sarah Ewell Heath and John Heath. James married Elizabeth Macon on September 21, 1820 at "Fairfield", according to the Richmond Inquirer.
American author and "first" editor of the Southern Literary Messenger. J.E. Heath was the author of Edge Hill, a novel of the American Revolution set in the southern colonies, dealing with the Fitzroyal family. He was also the generous contributor of "Editorial Remarks" to the first volume of The Southern Literary Messenger, and for many years he was the Auditor of the Accounts of the State of Virginia; and his father, John Heath, was the first President of Phi Beta Kappa. Heathsville in Northumberland County, Va. is named for this family.
