Ansel enlisted in 1775 from New Kent County, from where he marched to Williamsburg. While serving with the 1st Virginia Infantry regiment at Germantown, he was captured and held in Philadelphia, but escaped and made his way to Valley Forge. He was later wounded at Monmouth, and also served at Yorktown.
