John Lane served in the Revolutionary War, first in Capt. Lucas' Company of the 4th New Hampshire Infantry. He was wounded at the Battle of White Plains in 1776, and during the Siege of Savannah in 1779 was wounded and captured. After being exchanged, he joined Nelson's Corps of Virginia Cavalry, in which he served until the end of the War.

His wife Anna Maria Lane accompanied him in the field for much of the War, and was seriously wounded fighting as a soldier during the Battle of Germantown on 4 October 1777. Both he and she later received military pensions for their service. She was the only female Revolutionary War pensioner, and the only documented female Revolutionary War veteran, in Virginia.

After the War, John worked at the state arsenal in Fluvanna County, then moved with Anna Maria and there children to Richmond, where John served in the Public Guard.

NOTE: in a pension affidavit dated December 1819, he stated he was age 93; and in another affidavit dated April 1821, that he was age 94. Therefore, his birthdate was likely 1726.
