U.S. Senator. Graduating from Washington Academy in 1809, attended Dickinson College, (1809-10), studied law at William and Mary College (1813-14) was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Natchez, Mississippi, in 1816. He was judge of the Mississippi State Supreme Court, (1823-25) and appointed to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of David Holmes, serving (1825-26). On 1827, he was reelected to the United States Senate, serving until 1832, when he resigned to accept a judicial position as judge of the United States court for the district of Mississippi, (1832-36). He was appointed by President Andrew Jackson Charge d’Affaires of the United States to Mexico, serving January to December, 1836 and appointed by President Martin Van Buren as United States Minister Plenipotentiary to Mexico, serving (1839-42).
